Piperazine is an organic compound that consists of a six-membered ring containing two nitrogen in the ring.
Piperazine is frequently found in biologically active compounds across a number of different therapeutic areas. Some therapeutic areas include antifungals, antidepressants, antiviral, and serotonin receptor (5-HT) antagonists/agonists. Has been used since the 1950's as an anthelmintic, especially in horses and dogs. The anthelmintic properties of piperazine compounds is by paralysis of the parasites; this action is mediated by its agonistic effects on the GABA receptor. Wide variety of additional applications include use as an intermediate for pharmaceuticals, polymers, dyes, corrosion inhibitors, rubber accelerators and surfactants.
